Acoustic
Music Record's catalogue is devoted almost exclusively to acoustic guitar
music. Their roster of insanely gifted acoustic guitar players includes:
Duck Baker, Woody Mann, Stefan Grossman, Tim Sparks, Pierre Bensusan
and Bob Brozman. To mention just a few. Founded 12 years ago by the
German virtuoso guitarist Peter Finger, Acoustic Music Records is going
from strength to strength. At the start the label was laughed at. Acoustic
guitar music! They were told there couldn't possibly be a market for
such a specialist musical area. How wrong the critics were.
Today
Acoustic Music Records is a melting pot of seriously hot acoustic guitar
music, a veritable crucible of fingerstyle excellence where all musical
styles are catered for including: blues, jazz, classical, world music
and hard to define cross-overs. Of course when presented with such a
cornucopia of mind-boggling talent, the question is where do you start?
Which players do you get into? Well, an excellent place to start is
with their Acoustic Guitar Highlights series. These taster CD's feature
a collection of tracks from different guitarists and are a great way
of deciding which players you'd like to hear more of. And even better,
they only cost around $5. A bargain if ever there was one.
The
nice thing about Acoustic Music Records is that while they are dedicated
to showcasing the work of some of the world's very finest acoustic guitarists,
they have also thought of us mere mortals. They produce tuition material,
instructional books and CD's and video workshops. In fact, Acoustic
Music Records are publishing Rick Payne's AGW Fingerstyle Blues method
(Book + CD) in Autumn 2004.

BRITTA
MEDEIROS/MICHAEL SAGMEISTER
CD:
"The way we feel about it"
This
is Sagmeister's new project with German/Mexican vocalist, Britta
Medeiros, whose smoky, subtle voice is worth the entry fee alone.
Add Sagmeister's sensitive and imaginative nylon string acoustic
guitar accompaniments and you have a duo straight out of the top
drawer. "The Way We Feel About It" is a collection of
standards, bossa novas and pop songs, including such monsters as
"Fields of Gold", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"
and "Both Sides Now".

VARIOUS
ARTISTS
CD:"Reborn
on acoustic guitar"
This
is a new series from Acoustic Music Records billed as "virtuoso
acoustic guitar performances of classic pop songs" by artists
as varied as Madonna, Jimi Hendrix, Police, Kraftwerk and Tori Amos.
This is a CD to die for. Jacques Stotzem's rendition of "Purple
Haze" had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. You
wouldn't have thought it possible to do justice to such a tune on
an acoustic guitar, but Stotzem's arrangement really does rock.
Other guitarists featured include Neil Stacey, Michael Sagmeister
and Andrea Benzoni.

JOSCHO
STEPHAN
CD: "Django Forever"
Ever since his debut CD "Swinging Strings", Joshcho Stephan,
gypsy jazz guitarist supreme, has embarked on a meteoric career. His
second CD "Swing News" was also greeted with wild enthusiasm
by both press and public. Those who have experienced a concert by
this young man with his vigorously swinging back-up combo know the
ingredients of his style: the powerful anchor in the Django tradition,
technical brilliance, the wild and yet refined swing, harmonic diversity,
supple phrasing etc. Joscho
has long outgrown the mold of the erstwhile wunderkind, and with "Django
Forever", he now reveals himself as a mature, broadly talented
guitarist in the gypsy tradition.

GITARISSIMA
CD: "Melange"
Gitarrissima
consists of five young female guitarists who met in Vienna. The
quintet plays arrangements for a highly interesting instrumentation
of three concert, one octave and one bass guitar and produces a
sound with a special richness of color and a seldom heard orchestral
density. Gitarrissima stands for woven miniatures and
for string dances full of grace, playfulness and rhythmic concentration.
Melange offers a broad repertoire, with works by Bach, Rossini,
Franz Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Vittorio Monti and Astor Piazzolla.
The arrangements of concertos, songs and piano works are convincing
thanks to the balance of the voices and their airy transparency,
the unusual instrumentation offers up entirely new musical accents.

PETER
FINGER
CD: "Blue Moon"
"Few
can replace an entire orchestra with an acoustic guitar alone as
Peter Finger does", was the verdict of the highly critical
trade magazine, "Audio". "Blue Moon" is a serious
treat for fingerstyle fans, combining the most diverse musical ideas,
harmonic concepts and flowing melodies in a musically sensuous and
satisfying whole. When Peter starts up one of his awesome acoustic
power riffs, the effect is simply electrifying. How can he play
so fast and maintain such perfect musical coherence and integrity?
But Peter's tone and touch also dazzle when he is playing slowly.
Classical, folk, jazz, "Blue Moon" paints well nigh perfect
tone poems from a rich and widely diverse palette of guitar colours.
Quite simply, Peter Finger exemplifies the art of contemporary fingerstyle.

FRANCO
MORONE
CD:"The First Collection"
It's
great to see this reissue of one of Franco Morone's first CD's by
Acoustic Music Records. Morone has long been regarded as occupying
a place in the first rank of fingerstyle guitarists. "Franco
Morone has one of the most individual sounds amongst all contemporary
fingerstyle guitarists," said no less an authority than the
prestigious US guitar mag, "Acoustic Guitar". His intonation
is perfect, his technique terrific, but, as with all great musicians,
this is firmly placed at the disposal of the music. Morone's speciality
is traditional and modern Mediterranean styles, laced with delicious
celtic and bluesy flavours. From the rip- roaring opener "Bluesy
Cap" to the closing "Sliding Road Blues",
listening to "The First Collection" is quite simply one
of the greatest of pleasures.
