Pentatonic to the blues

To look at the minor blues pentatonic more closely I want to change the key to Gm. By doing this we see some common patterns that can be remembered easily across the fretboard. First lets look at all the Gm pentatonic blues scale notes up to the 12th fret.

Remember, from what we've learned so far, these notes work well over the three chord trick in Gm i.e. Gm Cm and Dm and can also be called the G blues scale, working well with G7 C7 and D7. The most easily recognised pattern is the guitarists staple diet. This is at the 3rd position starting on G.

To avoid starting always starting on the root note, it is a good idea to work modally through the scale, i.e. starting on different notes of the scale. This next pattern starts on the 2nd note - Bb.

The next pattern starts on the 4th note of the scale - C.

Playing in patterns is a great way of memorising the blue note positions. I find it easier to memorise short patterns and use them in my riff playing. If we look at the fretboard again I've highlighted some of these patterns.
