CHORD HARMONY - Major

The joy of the guitar is to sit around and strum a few chords, maybe play your favourite song or even make up one of your own. With all those chords around where do we start? It's a good idea to know which ones work well together. Well just as there are eight notes in basic major or minor scale so there are chords too.

Each scale note has a chord built on to it called a triad and each chord is given a roman numeral for reference. Let's try all these chords in sequence:

They all sound good in sequence but there are three very strong chords: These are C F and G, especially the F and G which are known as dominant chords. These three chords are often known as the three-chord trick or the I IV V progression.

To make the three chords play together smoothly the G chord is changed to a G7th:

There are many sequences or progressions that work well together. This one is very popular.
It's called the I VI IV V7 progression.
