Sing & Play Country Blues

With this post, we’re going back to our roots. We started AGW back in 1999 teaching Fingerstyle, Ragtime and Country Blues. That means the pre-war music of people like Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Blind Boy Fuller, Robert Johnson and a bunch of other awesome performers.

To play this music well you have to play a solid guitar groove. That doesn’t necessarily mean super complicated, but with a drive, groove and great feeling. Sometimes you’ll only be playing a few notes, but you have to pick them with passion. And of course you have to sing with your guitar, or at least have a singer to accompany. If you want to learn this art, or, if you already do it but want to improve, we can think of no better guide than Paul Rishell. Paul has been steeped in this music for nearly 50 years and played with likes of Son House, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf, so it’s fair to say he has a really authentic take on this music.

Check out these videos from his Truefire course Dirt Road Blues. In the first video he introduces the course and talks about the art in general and how to approach singing and playing Country Blues. The second video is a great performance of Blind Boy Fuller’s ‘Custard Pie’.
